I was a cross-country and middle distance runner in high school and college, setting
several school and meet records in the mile and 1/2 mile in high school. I became one of
the top 1/2 milers in New York State in Division III competition senior year in college.  I
continued running and occasionally raced through the 1970’s and early 1980s. Although
a 32-minute 10k runner and 1:12 half-marathoner on limited mileage (I could never do
more than 40 –50 miles per week without breaking down), I never came close to reaching
my athletic potential until turning to triathlon.  With swimming, biking and running, I was
finally able to achieve the very high level of fitness that had eluded me in running
because of my "fragile" biomechanics.

I attempted my first triathlon in 1983 in Portland, Maine, but could not finish the 58 degree
ocean water swim because of hypothermia – which was the case for many others that
day!  There were no swimming wetsuits in use back then. Undeterred, the following year I
came in 2nd overall in my first completed triathlon, the Camden, Maine Tinman, after only
a month of swim and bike training on top of my usual run training. In 1985, I repeated the
same race and finish place and added bike racing and a team triathlon to my competitive
schedule, despite the pressures of a consulting job requiring 50 – 60 hour workweeks.

In 1986, I began serious training for triathlons, soon establishing myself as one of the top
triathletes and duathletes in New England overall. From the late 80s to the late 90s, I was
the top triathlete/duathlete in Maine. I have been one of the top masters triathletes and
duathletes in the nation and world since 1989, excelling at all distances.

At age 43, I was ranked 18th overall among all North American elite/professionals in
duathlon for 1991 by virtue of my high overall finishes in the popular Coors Light Duathlon
Series and National Championships.  One of my more notable races at that time came at
the 1991 Coors Light Duathlon in Boston where I ran right behind Frank Shorter in the
first 5K, then biked away to beat the 1972 Olympic Marathon gold medalist by three
minutes.

After several lost seasons recuperating from injuries from two bike crashes in the late
1990s, I came back nearly as fast as ever in 2001 at TimeoutProductions, Fairlee,
Vermont race.  I finished 3rd in the Elite/Pro division and 4th overall in a field of over 500
participants – at age 52.
