Coaching Philosophy

My role as a coach is to enhance your ability to reach your goals.  As your coach, I help
you identify and objectively set goals that are realistic and attainable according to your
athletic ability and within personal, work and lifestyle constraints.

Whether you are a beginner, intermediate or advanced triathlete or other endurance
athlete, my goal is to help you to train and race with competence and excel according to
your individual abilities and desires. I will recommend training of a quality and specificity
that will help you meet your goals while minimizing the potential for overdoing training
stresses that would be to the detriment of your athletic performance or overall well being.

I also understand the non-training stressors that may impact an individual’s athletic
performance and quality of life.  Having experienced training and racing at a high level
along with a demanding professional career has taught me to recognize when stress can
be overwhelming.  It is important to strive for balance according to your own
circumstances.  Training and racing in any endurance sport requires discipline and
dedication, but not to the exclusion of all else in life.

I will try to teach you how performance depends on your own physical capabilities and
physiology, and how training recommendations are intended to develop those capabilities.
I also believe mental training, visualization, and other psychological components of
athletic performance are essential to a well-rounded training program -- the body and
mind must be trained together.

In the same way that I have excelled as a triathlete, I strive for excellence as a coach to
provide up-to-date health and exercise science knowledge and expertise. I am always
learning and seeking information regarding training methods, sports medicine and health
sciences research.

I am committed to staying current on USAT standards/rules, certification requirements and
continuing education. I support USAT in its mission and goals, including encouraging
growth and development of the sport at all levels.

Finally, I will strive to set an example and demonstrate an attitude that training, fitness and
a healthy lifestyle should be lifelong pursuits that complement one’s quality of life.
